As you may have seen on his social media accounts last week and in the local press, Bill Esterson MP has joined Peter Dowd MP in publicly supporting our calls for an alternative solution to the proposed road through Rimrose Valley. This is a welcome and significant development. This is because Mr Esterson is also a public supporter of Peel Ports and their expansion of the Port of Liverpool. We are aware that many people view the planned road as being a direct result of this expansion. We are therefore extremely interested to hear his views on whether it is possible to use his unique position to influence the decision-makers at Westminster. We welcome the opportunity to work together in our fight against the road.
In his statement, he said “The government’s own air quality strategy says that roadside emissions are a massive threat to health. What’s needed is investment from the government in rail freight not a road through a country park”. He has also written to the Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, calling on him to support his calls for both a tunnel and rail solution. We have requested that the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, be copied on this letter, as he has the power to reverse the decision to build the road.
Both MPs have been invited to our next meeting with Sefton Council this Saturday, 16th December. At this meeting, we will be asking for an update on the Judicial Review process and a number of other matters we raised when we were last together.
