On Sunday 30th August a group of us, ably led by Les our very own historian, set off on a fascinating 2 hour ramble along the canal at Rimrose Valley. It was very interesting to get the insights to the past. We learned about many things. For instance where the methane processing chamber used to be sited for extracting the hazardous gases produced by the old tip landfill and how 300 boats a day would pass each way along the canal shipping coal. It was also explained how the canal design keeps the water IN the canal!
This is just a few of the many, many facts Les imparted, along with old black and white photos and a great community spirit felt and shared by all.
Here are some of the lovely comments we’ve received from people attending the walk:
Another lovely morning for our Canal Walk. Les was very knowledgeable about the canal and surrounding areas history and made it interesting. We saw several barges also enjoying the trip up and down as in days gone by and there were a lot of cycling groups out and about. I think there will also be a film/video of our morning for members to enjoy. Thanks to the organisers!! – Lynn T

I would just like to thank the organizers and Les for the running commentary. It was a most enjoyable morning. It was very interesting and informative. Everybody was very friendly and made us feel very welcome 🙂 We will definitely be attending more of the excursions with the Rimrose Valley friends. For those of you, who haven’t attended one of these trips, why not give it a go you might be pleasantly surprised! Thank you very much. Kind Regards. Paula H
The walk was a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning, I’ve lived in the area most of my life, and learnt so much I didn’t know, leaving the walk wanting to know more. It has been a joy to rediscover the country park, over the last few weeks, and I am very much looking forward to the next walk. Thankyou Rimrose Valley Friends – Lottie
